AN ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IN THE LOWVELD

Introducing our visionary client, Mr and Mrs Morgan, who dared to dream beyond the ordinary and embrace a future where sustainability and harmony with nature coexist flawlessly. Nestled amidst the captivating beauty of the Lowveld region, this client envisioned a remarkable endeavour, the creation of an eco-friendly, natural build home that will serve as a shining example of environmental consciousness.

THE HOMEOWNERS’ DREAM

Their dream encompassed a dwelling that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, employing innovative technologies and designs that minimize environmental impact whilst maximizing energy efficiency. Driven by their love for the Lowveld’s breath-taking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and pristine habitats, the Morgans sought to construct a sanctuary that harmonizes with the environment rather than dominating it.

Beyond its functional design, this visionary client yearned for a residence that is aesthetically captivating, merging modern elegance with the charm of a natural build. Architectural ingenuity had to play a pivotal role, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces to create a symbiotic relationship between the house and its surroundings. The only one who could do this task was Andy Horn, from Eco Design Architects, a trailblazer whose passion for both architecture and the environment has revolutionized the concept of sustainable living. Andy has garnered widespread recognition and numerous accolades for their ground-breaking work in sustainable architecture.

Justin Poggenpoel, owner of Assegai Services, offer a variety of services including project management, property management, cleaning services, gardening services, etc. This was the perfect combination for Andy to decide to appoint him as the project manager. Justin was responsible for sourcing contractors such as Let’s Talk Decking and other suppliers. He was also responsible for the construction of the rammed earth walls which plays a major role in the overall architectural design of the house.

Andy recognized the potential of a soil-planted green roof to contribute to the overall sustainability of the building. The design envisioned a unique approach to roof construction, where a living roof was to be supported by robust timber trusses. Understanding the vital role timber plays in sustainable construction, Andy embarked on a search for a knowledgeable timber specialist. When it comes to timber, Abrie Visagie from JNA Roofing is the specialist to trust, and his work speaks volumes of his unrivalled skill and expertise.

Our client desired a nostalgic touch in their home, reminiscent of their childhood memories of the farm they grew up on. They wished to incorporate a barn-like timber truss configuration design supporting a planted roof. The design needed to address structural integrity and the specific needs of the vegetated roof system. Timber trusses are commonly used for their strength and flexibility, making them suitable for accommodating the weight of the soil and vegetation. Special attention was given by carefully selecting locally sourced timber species, which was naturally treated with boron on site, with high durability and resistance to decay, ensuring the longevity of the truss system. Additionally, the truss spacing and dimensions were carefully calculated to distribute the weight of the soil and vegetation evenly across the structure, preventing excessive loads on individual trusses.

JNA Roofing’s design presented an innovative solution that harmonizes the benefits of green roofs with the structural strength and sustainability of timber trusses. By utilizing timber trusses to support soil-planted roofs, we created a visually appealing, environmentally conscious, and structurally sound roofing system. This integration of natural and engineered elements represented a significant step forward in sustainable design.

By transforming their vision into reality, the professional team aimed to ignite a sustainable revolution, encouraging others to embark on a similar path and collectively contribute to a greener future. Embarking on this journey of eco-friendly construction in South Africa, we serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, highlighting the profound impact our choices can have on the world. Through the professional team’s unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable living, they sought to create not just a house, but a legacy of responsible coexistence with nature in one of the world’s most precious ecosystems.
