STRYDOM – NIEUWOUDTVILLE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Situated on Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm in Nieuwoudtville, this little cottage was once the home and studio of the late Willem Strydom, a well-renowned South African artist and sculptor.

To preserve the historical significance of the building, we used sonqua sunreed (sonkwas riet) as the thatch material. Sonqua sunreed is endemic to the area and resembles the Rooibos plant which is also found in South Africa. Due to the nature of the reed, it needs to be fitted to the roof ‘upside-down’, which gives the roof a more robust look.

JNA Thatchers completed this re-thatch project, using our Closed Construction Thatching method, ensuring that this little cottage remains protected against the elements for many years to come.
